It's Fledging Season

Wait. What? Already?

Yes, our first (known) Laysan albatross fledgling is headed for the North Pacific Ocean in search of squid and other yummies. Here is "Valedictorian" one week before flight.

It happens so quickly. The season wears on; we get lulled into thinking these chicks will be here for a while. Then, poof, the first one spreads those six-and-a-half-foot wings and heads to the sea, their real home.

Here's another view of Valedictorian.

And here is Valedictorian a day before fledging.

Be sure to keep checking back. I'll keep adding more images of chicks as they lose their down and "grow" into their glamorous selves.

For the month of June, twenty percent of Albatography print proceeds will go to Cornell Lab of Ornithology's #AlbatrossCam.
